Since my book Nine Year Pregnancy has been released, I am often asked the question: “Delana, why did your adoption process take so long?”

The short answer is: Because at every seemingly opened door along the way, we prayed, “God, if this is not your plan for us please close this door.” And He did. Until February 2005 … that door remained open …

The Stages of “Pregnancy” in Adoption

Lately, I have read many blog posts about “paper pregnancies” and other similar terms in reference to the waiting period of adoption.

Today, I read the article “Adoption: What to Expect While You’re Waiting to Adopt.” The writer, author Rebecca Lyn Gold, does a great job summarizing each stage of adoption and giving parallels to pregnancy.

In my book Nine Year Pregnancy each chapter tells about part of the adoption journey in terms of a pregnancy, with chapter titles such as: Conception, Expecting, Heartbeat, False Contractions, Bed Rest, Contractions, Labor, Delivery, Newborn, Homecoming, etc.

How long was your adoption “pregnancy”? What was the most difficult stage? Feel free to leave a comment, I’d love to hear your story (even if you’re still waiting).

A Valentine Gift

On Valentine’s Day 2007, we received this picture of the little girl who would soon become a part of our family.

On February 14, 2012, from 1:30-3:30 pm, I will be at the Ed White Elementary School library in El Lago, TX, selling and signing the book about our journey–Nine Year Pregnancy.

On February 19, 2012, after both morning services, I will be at University Baptist Church Clear Lake for a second book signing.
