On the Adoptive Families “30 Ways to Celebrate National Adoption Month 2011” calendar, they suggested “Make an effort to
help someone who is considering adoption. If you’re a parent, tell them about the highs, the lows, the unforgettable moments. Tell them why you’d do it all over again!”
In my book Nine Year Pregnancy: Waiting on God–Our Journey of Adoption, I talk about this very concept. I share the trials in bonding, and I discuss the stages it can take to reaching that point where we were able to say “Yes, she was worth it all! Yes, I would do it all over again to have our precious daughter!” I also talk about the early days/weeks/months when I wondered if we had done the right thing.
If you have recently brought home a child, particularly one that is two or older, hang in there! Keep on giving love . . . even on those days when you don’t feel “in love” or those days it doesn’t seem like your child loves you.
Love reminds me of the verse that says:
“Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again.”
